Pros

Some of the other employees were pretty swell. The managers were all friendly, intelligent and relatively accessible.

Cons

It's a crumby retail job I got to make some money while looking for a regular 9-5 job, and SPOILER ALERT the public sucks. If you don't want to end up totally misanthropic, stay out of retail. After a time, I was promoted to sort-of manager, and I can say that for what the company expects out of it's cashiers on up to management, the compensation is VERY LOW.

Advice to Management

Better pay means happier employees, more productivity etcetera. Perhaps, and I imagine this goes for most big retail stores, have policies created by people with actual retail experience, not MBAs who've never worked directly for the public.

    Pros

It is a job. At first things were promising for advancement. .

    Cons

It is an extremely underpaying job. Benefits sound good but in reality are disappointing. Health Insurance is a papertrail nightmare. The ISCE DOES NOT ALLOW YOU TO WORK IN YOUR PREFERRED AREA. That part of the review is pure bravo sierra. The ISCE program is almost word for word the same program Circuit City implemented before they went under. Best Buy is doing the same thing and their sirvival outlook is bleak. They make the economic news every other week in the top 10 businesses that may not exist in a year. ISCE is being implemented at Office Depot in a heavyhanded manner. ISCE change agents are in each store for at least 2 weeks overseeing the startup of ISCE. They come across the same as one would think a Soviet Political Officer would act. The change agent were dealing with has less time with the company than many store managers, assistant managers and hourly associates. Bottom line, it is corporate suicide.

    Advice to Management

Find a new company to work for.

    Pros

Fairly decent training regimen. Store manager and some assistant managers care about your success within the company.

    Cons

ISCE program is a failure. Customers are feeling stalked based upon a constant hounding of associates and "sales leaders". Morning freight goals unrealistic; the program is always being altered. Informed upon inception of the program that it was designed to "trim the fat" and to "expect a lot of turnover". More or less, the program running nationwide in Office Depot retail stores is designed to set many, many associates and especially new hires up for failure which in itself is a crime. DM's micromanage at almost a cellular level and believe the program is infallible; i.e. if your store is not posting sales in various departments/attachments, you are not initiating the program properly. Again, unrealistic not only in today's economy but also in the fact that hard working associates are penalized for things outside of their control. How often do you buy product and services from pre-programmed robots who are only supposed to say certain phrases? Consumers are smarter than you think, and many have already shown their disapproval of the program based upon the artificiality of the associate that the program commands you to have. Promotion is based upon how well in you are with the store manager, then how well liked he is by the DM in your area. Red tape abounds to the point of insanity and operations are in shambles in more than just a few stores. The pay is insulting to recent college grads and people with previous management experience at assistant/store manager levels within other companies, and most simply take the paycheck until something better comes along. The ISCE program is a corollary to a company that has long since rejected any idea of caring about it's employees.

    Advice to Management

Drop the ISCE program. It's not successful, it's not popping sales (fact). Start caring about your employees again. Ask associates in your stores about their honest opinion of the program and the actual customer reaction. And don't fire them afterwards when they don't tell you what you want to hear, try giving them a raise instead. They are your lifeblood. Without them there is no Office Depot, or any other company for that matter. It may be easy to find bodies that will take mediocre pay to fill the store, but it's hard to find associates with the product knowledge and sales experience needed to actually grow your sales and get your stock back over $2.50 a share.
