I have been working at Office Depot part-time (less than a year)

Pros

Very high turnover allows for advancement
Very large selection of printers and ink
Very large selection of office chairs

Cons

· Office Depot only hires part-time at or near minimum wage w/ limited benefits for non-management positions
· Direct Deposit or ePay card, paycheck not an option after 1st pay period
· Schedule only posted 3-4 days in advance on Wed/Thur for week starting Sunday
· Management is routinely rotated between stores so all stores are clones

· Office Depot is very formalistic
· All work stops from 11am – 3pm during Depot Time
· Cannot work on customer's computer during 11 – 3 Depot Time
· Sales leader micromanages all activity during 11 - 3 Depot Time
· Must pass customers from associate in one zone to another zone over the radio
· Must announce over the radio everything you suggested to each customer
· Mandatory in-person greeting of “What brings you to Office Depot?” not "How can I help you?"
· Mandatory over the phone greeting of “How may I take care of your business?”
· 3 out of 5 in customer survey is failing
· Consequences if customer satisfaction less than 95%
· Customers object to radio earpiece as security related
· Stores are so small you do it all: cashier, sales, stocking, tags, etc.
· Stores are very goal driven with time limits on breaking down each pallet, stocking, etc.
· Very difficult to connect to Wi-Fi
· Customers cannot use store computers to access e-mails to print documents, forms, etc.
· Ordering tech services or merchandise is unnecessarily complicated
· Most computer repairs is done by remote agent
· Computer work station is a way too small cupboard
· Office Depot sells Apple accessories but not Apple electronics

Office Depot can be a bad relationship like walking on egg shells. I strongly suggest discretely inquiring about job satisfaction before working there.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Corporate needs to change the scheduling system so work schedules are posted two weeks in advance so employees can plan their personal lives.

Corporate needs to get rid of the template greetings and sales tactics and allow associates to be human beings and not robots. People get tired of hearing the same thing over and over. It sounds fabricated because it is.

I worked at Office Depot part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Being closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Time goes by fast and you can develop a connection with regular customers.

    Cons

Management has no ideal who is actually doing the work to keep things nice and stocked on the shelves for the customers. There is only a hand full of employees that keep things running everyone else thinks it's social time when there at work. Management will hire friends in and then promote them in stead of promoting someone who has been there and was looking for a promotions. Management is lazy the only time they really help with customers is when the DM is in, otherwise they are in the office texting or eating. When the DM is in the customers get help alot more promptly and the flow of the store is alot smoother it's Amazing how much the atmosphere changes when someone is there to make sure everyone is doing the job witch is (DEPOT) drop everything people over task. I think the management has forgotten this.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice to the management is stop getting so close to your coworkers. You hired them to help run Office Depot not to become best friends and talk all the time when there are task at hand. That is why you have to stay so late when closing.

    I worked at Office Depot

    Pros

If you get a good SM, then everything is great. Having a strong team of managers in the store makes all the difference. Overall, its not terrible.

    Cons

The bad SM population outweigh the good SM's. HR is slow to move when there are bad managers or really bad associates.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need to have better accountability for Store Managers who do not perform. A successful store begins at the top, if there is a store manager in place who cant/wont or are unable to train, coach and lead the team, that wont get the job done. In the end, its the customer who suffers.
