ISCE is awful, slim to no chance to advance, and no clear direction from the company

I worked at Office Depot full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

This is (was?) a great job for a college student. Hours a flexible, pay can be decent, there's a chance for commission, and, depending on the store, you can work with some great people. It's stable, as well. I worked there for 7 years.

    Cons

There is no clear direction for the company, and it is very hard to get promoted. New strategies are a regularity, and ISCE (Pronounced Ice) is the worst program over the seven years I worked there. Nobody enjoys it, and since it was implemented, employee morale has plummeted and employee turnover has skyrocketed. Great customer service starts with the employees. If the employee is unhappy, they put in less effort with the customer.

There have also been many changes to cut employee benefits:
-Tuition reimbursement abolished (Came back recently for FT employees only, and a meager amount)
    -No more stock discounts
-Part time holiday pay: Formerly 4 hours for holidays even if the employee didn't work, is now time and a half if you work the holiday.
-Vacation/sick/personal used to be accumulated for hours worked, but is now front loaded. If you don't use 'em before the end of the year, they're gone. There's no taking them with you when you leave, either.
-Commission, formerly something you could expect each month, became performance based with unobtainable goals.
-Various little perks like a gift card for Christmas, or a turkey coupon for Thanksgiving were abolished.

Ah, and the commission thing. Formerly, employees would receive a percentage based commission. Now, each store has a sales goal each month, and the goal is near impossible to reach. Even after a yearly raise, I made less money than the previous year because commission was cut so dramatically. Employee morale was further reduced, and the salesmen were less likely to sell PPP's or TDS's because there wasn't much point. I get paid the same either way, so why should I try so hard?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look for talent in your company! Put together a program for those interested in promotion. You're losing great people. Drop the ISCE program - It's a joke, and it's hurting company morale. Incentivize sales again: By placing unobtainable sales goals to avoid paying out commission, you're actually selling fewer PPPs and TDSs because employees are less enthusiastic about selling the products.

I worked at Office Depot part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Office Depot is a great place to work if you love working with customers to make them happy. The people are usually fun.

    Cons

You only get 10% off of merchandise. Are not fond of giving raises. Sometimes you will work 40 hour weeks and be called in on your day off (very often).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take away the new associate program, please. It sucks so badly. Either do that, or implement some new interactive teaching on the computers. Implement new computers. Copy Center Associates cannot do their job correctly if colors don't show up on the screen as they will in print out. the computers are outdated and slow. Depot Time is a good program, and great company values.
