Office Depot Department Manager:   (Past Employee - 2009)

Pros

They take of their employees with great benefits. Managers are willing to listen to new ideas and co exist without feeling like one is better than the other.

Cons

The company is in danger in these tough economic times so your job might not be secure. As a store that caters to small businesses the downturn in the economy has only made it worse since the smaller stores are closing and customers are thinning out. Too many planogram changes tend to bog down workers.

Advice to Senior Management

Work with the store and assistant managers to set better goals and make jobs efficient to better serve the customers.

How could you score this company a 5.0? You must be corporate sponsored.

First off, our benefits have been reduced and the cost has tripled. There are no benefits to purchasing our benefits.

Second, I have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to managers willing to listen. We don't care about what the employees have to say, we simply do what our DM tells us to do. This year, our goal is to weed out older, higher paid and gossip laden employees.

The DM said, "Look hard at the employees that feel we owe them a job. The one's that do just enough to get by and make more than the minimum wage should be replaced ASAP. With this job market, we can get anyone to work harder for less money. We no longer want long term employees below the manager level. And if you have an employee who talks about our company in a negative manner, you have my approval to fire them today. We'd be better off hiring foreign exchange students who don't say much and show up on time". "If your managers can't get these people out of the company, then fire them as well"

I certainly hope you are exaggerating about the remark about what your DM is saying. I am not that shocked, more stupefied than anything else, that a DM with impossible-to-reach standards would want stores to let go of their long-term employees who are usually the best employees too. These are the guys that put immense amounts of pressure on store managers to sell and get everything done in a timely manner, yet they want foreign exchange students manning the floor? Talk about your double standards.
