Office Depot – “Not what it used to be ...”
Pros
Unfortunately, there aren't that many. This would be a completely different review if it were, say, 4 or 5 years ago. I enjoy the people I work with. They are the most reliable, knowledgeable and competent group I've ever worked with. I do get support from my immediate manager on work/life balance, but that's as far as it goes. His manager clearly frowns upon it, and isn't afraid to make it known. My manager is appreciative and provides recognition discreetly, only because he is afraid HIS manager will see it and his butt will be chewed out. Corporate does have a nice new fitness center.
Cons
It's unfortunate that there are "professionals" - and I use that term loosely - that are so rude, unprofessional and disrespectful of others, that it creates almost a borderline hostile environment. And because the individuals that THEY report to sit on a completely different floor of the building, they have no idea what is going on. Nobody feels safe to report it, because we need our jobs. There is a lot of favoritism and politics. If you are a puppet and do what is told with no questions asked - you get raises and move up. Employee morale is low, low, low.
Advice to Senior Management
If I knew what to advise, I'd be an executive. I don't know what to do. But I do know that there are too many levels (at least in my department). Get rid of some Director and/or VP levels who appear to do little more than be the paper-pusher from the level below to the level above. Start (go back to) treating employees with respect and realize that employees are an investment, and without them, the Company is nothing. If management (middle management and executive management) would realize that all employees have their own individual talents and it takes ALL these talents to successfully run the Company, it would be a better place. It will never again be a compelling place to work, shop and invest - but it would be a little better.
