Poor Canadian leadership at a shrinking company in a declining industry

Pros

At the highest level, the marketing strategy is defined by two customer segments - small and large. If you are good at selling a plan attached to this - even if it has no real metrics for success or failure - you will have a long tenure with little professional satisfaction. The Business Development and Sales teams are the only reason that any salaries are paid. Work for them.

Cons

Absent leadership with no accountability to the the parent company. Money is lost year after year with no change in senior leadership - only job losses for those who are required follow their direction.

Advice to Management

Marketing senior leadership (Director and above) need to be accountable to hard numbers. Ensure that at the start of the year, senior leadership has put in place a detailed plan, created with the knowledge and buy-in of employees. Break the plan down to quarterly goals and allow employees the ownership and respect to see these goals through without disruption or priority change.

    Pros

    They have a lot of good people and a strong infrastructure. Organization has a lot of unrealized potential and could regain a lot of their market position witht the right management.

    Cons

    Extremely political environment. Layoffs have gutted the "working staff" but have left management completely intact. There is literally no one left to do the work and those who remain are at the end of the rope. The prevailing sense is that management feels everyone is replacable and if you are not happy with the conditions they would be more than happy to find someone better to replace you.

    Advice to Management

    Managers are great but they don't do the work of the business. If you work your staff to death they will continue to leave along with your only hope of regaining the companies strength.

    Pros

    overall there are a lot of people who care about the company because they are "lifers"

    Cons

    the senior leadership has totally lost sight of their path. they launched a strategy without a plan... no communication. This is very old school and not fun anymore.

    Advice to Management

    please get overhauled. many of you are great leaders but your ability to lead has been overshadowed by too many things... what happened?
