I worked at OfficeMax full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

The customers and associates. There's always something to do to keep productive and each day is different than the next.

Cons

The high pressure to sell services where management was rarely positive with coaching others on their performance. Training to succeed was almost non-existent (in my location). Management had unrealistic expectations of the time required to complete tasks and would never allow the time to train others to help. Customers always come first so you can't hold it against someone for not completing tasks because they were assisting customers. Overtime is not permitted without District Manager approval and the schedule rarely allowed time to get tasks done as the company had limited payroll dollars to go around.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Support your seasoned staff especially when you're new to the company. Don't take them for granted and accuse them of making you look bad.

I have been working at OfficeMax part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

When it is not back to school season, it is pretty slow. Before I worked there, I never even thought of shopping at OfficeMax. Who pays for this stuff when Walmart is way cheaper? Not to mention, OfficeMax has hardly any locations, you literally have to travel to find one.

ImPress is a pretty easy job as well as long as you learn as you go, it is fine and you can take orders if you are unsure.

As for sales associates, they are required to be on the floor and talk to the few customers that come in, and they get furniture down when a customer needs it, which is easy.

    Cons

    5-9 hour shifts

They make you ask so many questions that bug people at the register. "Do you have a Max Perks card? Would you like any paper today it's two for ten? Would you like to make a small donation to a local teacher?" It's annoying.

There is nothing to do a lot of the times ,and the managers will ask what you're working on and yell at you if you;re not doing anything, yet there is NOTHING to do.

ImPress customers can be so rude.
