Former Employee - Front End Sales/Print Center Associate in Lancaster, OH

I worked at OfficeMax full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Flexible hours, Sometimes got to pop bubble wrap

Cons

Constantly understaffed, Paid very low even when responsibility increased, Time-wasting activities as mandated by corporate, Management and Upper Management did not stand behind their employees (even when customers were abusive or rude), Company policies were thrown aside when a customer complained, Unconcerned management, Religious discrimination, No room for advancement or motivators to do so

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop wasting people's time with things like LP Edge or Huddles. Don't come down so hard on management for customer complaints--sometimes customers are wrong, or abusive towards employees. When a regular employee enforces a company policy, all the customer has to do is whine to a manager, and they bend over backwards and do whatever the customer wants--anything to avoid a complaint, even if it's upholding the company's own polices. Good luck on your merger with Office Depot.

I have been working at OfficeMax full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Coworkers are some of the best people I've had the pleasure to work with. Store manager is one of the best bosses I've ever had in retail. DM shows that he cares, or at least pretends to.

    Cons

Not enough payroll. Might lose job due to merger with Office Depot. To many expectations with little or no hours to complete it. Roll out new planograms with no items to stock, or send new items with no lace to put them. Corporate is completely detached from the day to day at the store level.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit cutting payroll. It takes money to make money and by not having enough associates in the store, how are we suppose to offer the "Best total solution"? Quit rolling out new planograms with no new items to stock. Also quit sending new items whose planograms has not been updated.

    Pros

Lower Management was fair and encouraging

    Cons

Lowest pay for amount of work at retail especially with the amount of expertise expected.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward your employees for being knowledgeable and not just for selling your warranty schemes.
