Pros

When you move to a smaller market than NY, the agency name goes a long way. You do get to swing at some big projects and see how it's done.

Cons

Reality is in such a big shop you need a big title to get some work through, or manage to be in the good graces of a big name.

I have been working at Ogilvy & Mather full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Employees are treated great. Parties, perks, tons of culture, sports teams. They truly care and work hard to keep their employees happy. You won't get locked into a single account here. The resource managers strive to keep people fresh. There are a lot of seasoned creative directors to learn from. Compensation is great, and they aren't stingy about expensing dinners and cabs for working late.

    Cons

From a creative perspective, O&M Chicago has VERY conservative clients. It results in very safe, vanilla work. Ogilvy seems to be tipping from a creative-led, to an account-led agency. It's a great place for creatives looking to wind down their career and make good money. Younger people looking to build their book might look elsewhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus. The O&M Chicago has grown exponentially during it's recent success. Management is blood-thirsty and focusing completely on new business. At the same time, the creative culture and focus that David Ogilvy built the company around seems to be slipping through the cracks. With all the new hires, there seems to be no effort to make sure these new people are the RIGHT people for the job.

Smart people, great brands, lots of opportunity. Struggles with digital transformation still.

I have been working at Ogilvy & Mather (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Agency with great heritage, strong processes in place, and a lot of very smart people that push your thinking. Opportunity to work with really big brands often on very big marketing and business challenges. Great benefits and good work/life balance. Teamwork oriented culture, very friendly and pleasant working environment. Office in crazy location, but is beautiful with lots of light, a gym, bike parking, showers, nurse's office, cafeteria, roofdeck.

    Cons

Talks constantly about being all about 'digital' and transforming to a 'digital' agency throughout, but has never really followed through from a senior management perspective. Fits and starts at hiring 'chief digital officers' but never really getting serious about hiring senior account staff who are digital natives and can sell in digital work.

As an added challenge, the agency's zillions of P&L silos separate out disciplines in ways that are truly disservices to delivering for clients. Social is separate from Media which is separate from "digital" which is separate from CRM which is separate from Advertising. Need better integration.

All this being said they do have great digital creative if/when it can be sold through to clients. The work itself is first class. Helped by strong strategic focus of agency.
