A Collection of Narcissists - Run Away!

Pros

There were pockets of good in this organization, but management never recognized or rewarded them. Most of the students were great, as were most of the Visiting Scholars, older Faculty & Staff.

Cons

Upper management was full of uber narcissists who never gave credit or praise, constantly pressured you for free O/T, and expected you to be perpetually on-call. Employees are routinely degraded and treated as second-class citizens and whipping boys. Getting screamed at was a weekly function for my job, and was the norm for everyone, except their favorite few.

Unless you're one of their favorites, you will have a hard time working there.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a new Director, fire the incompetant office assistants & hold those who made this such a hostile place accountable for their actions.

    Good benefits, bad management

Current Employee - Systems Developer/Engineer in Columbus, OH

    Pros

The best part about working for OSU are the benefits, particularly the educational ones. You can often get flex time to take classes.

    Cons

As far as a career in IT goes, it is very limited. The raises are miniscule and there is not much room for advancement. OSU tends to be management-heavy. There is a 1:1 director/associate director to developer ratio in my department. Management's philosophy is that "you don't need a technical background to manage technology."

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Re-examine the matrix-management model or expect a lot of turnover from your IT workforce. Reduce the number of project managers and directors. Hire IT leadership with technical backgrounds.

    Pros

It is a huge school, very diverse. And Columbus is a good place to work, large enough to have all kinds of amenities and opportunities.

    Cons

Pay is low in our department, but it depends on departments.
