I worked at Oliver Wyman full-time (more than an year)

Pros

Great networking and cultural enforcement activities (e.g. happy hour every Friday, offsites for various practice areas)
Rapid promotion provides strong incentive to perform

Cons

Outside of risk management, content gets a bit thin as most partners lack the appropriate background
Going into unchartered waters due to focus on relationship based selling versus thought leadership
Hours can be long though that comes with the territory. In line with most management consulting firms when it comes to workload.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Slow and steady wins the game while retaining a strong perspective on quality

I worked at Oliver Wyman full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    - Major travel to large financial and corporate centers

    Cons

    - Questionable contracts with clients (most contracts have a highly superfluous end-objectives and seem to be mostly the result of "you scratch my back, I scratch yours" relationships with middle-managers at clients. It is very difficult to demonstrate that they generate any value added to the end clients

    - Involved in most of the banks and insurance companies that collapsed in the financial crisis, yet refuse to acknowledge their significant responsibility for the disaster. It is rather shocking that they are getting any business since to be honest (e.g. they had a significant role at AIG, Fannie and Freddie, to name a few)

    - Too many of their consultants are essentially frustrated wannabe-high-financiers, who are eternally attempting to extract high-finance-type salaries in an industry where those pay levels cannot legitimately be supported (unless you are taking advantage of a client through questionable mandates or relationships). This leads to a very unwelcoming and toxic working environment

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This company shouldn't be part of a publicly listed corporation: the pressures to generate earnings growth at all cost have significantly eroded the quality of its work and mandates

I have been working at Oliver Wyman full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Diverse and interesting staff, career advancement for some, plenty of opportunities to get involved and engaged. Can be fun and fulfilling at times

    Cons

Highly politicized and divisive culture despite years of trying to create a unified internal identity as a desirable place to start and maintain a support staff career. For some, mostly on the consulting side, it can be a dream opportunity, but for support staff, its a case of the prisoners standing behind the barbed wire watching the parade of all that fine internal cultural growth and development pass them by. Double-standards abound. Lot's of fine words and time expended on improving the culture, but in practice, just not working. Severe lack of respect for support staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Wake up and pay attention. You've got some real issues to deal with.
