Some great people, but direction of company is unclear based on leadership in Tokyo.

I have been working at Olympus Corporation of the Americas full-time (more than an year)

Pros

There are a lot of good people, and the pay and benefits are fair. The base salaries are a little lower than average, but with larger potential bonuses (partially based on employee performance, partially on company financial performance).

Cons

It can be frustrating dealing with parent company in Tokyo. In addition, local management is somewhat limited, since all important decisions must go through the parent company. So there is a lot of beauracracy.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more frequent updates to employees regarding the company, so that we aren't finding out important events through the news after the fact.

The absolute worst place I have worked in my 20+ year career.

    Pros

There are some good, hard-working and genuinely nice people who carry the organization. These are those in the trenches, not those who sit around making poor decisions without strategic thinking. Despite poor treatment and and a complete lack of appreciation, a good number of people get up every day and drag themselves into the office and try to do the best they can.

    Cons

A "have" and "have not" environment. This is not an environment where everyone gets a fair shake and equal opportunity to succeed. Take it from someone who has been on both sides of this, if you are not in the right group, you might as well leave as you will never get the same opportunities to advance your career. As a manager, this can be a tough environment to provide opportunities for your employees.

Lack of integrity. Upper management is never fully honest with employees and you are more likely to find out what is going on from the newspaper than the company communications, even as an employee. It is difficult to work for an employer who is never fully honest with employees regarding company issues.

Company politics are exhausting. Even in the most tactful manner, employees can never fully tell the truth unless it is 100% positive. Issues never get resolved.

    No regard for work/life balance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management hears what they want to hear so why bother.... Advice to potential employees is STAY AWAY.

I worked at Olympus Corporation of the Americas full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The great people working to make it a successful company. Some of the best products in the world., used to help people, and to save lives.

    Cons

Leadership seemed to be without direction. Courses of action seemed to be without thought or plan. No long term career path, or opportunity for advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Share long term plans, and make employees feel a part of something. Give people goals and allow them to help develop road maps. Empower your people!
