Pros

Relatively low stress work environment
Allows hourly workers to work overtime, not required
Relatively family friendly, especially compared to high tech firms
Core products in medical devices are good and market share is strong

Cons

Management is poorly run from top down and throughout, see news stories about scandals and how they were handled. Management has trouble making decisions, does not follow through on plans. Company does not assist employees with career development, offers few options. There's a difference between frugal and cheap. Frugal is selective but still willing to spend on things worthwhile. Cheap doesn't want to spend any money, afraid to make a mistake. They don't know how to recognize a good investment from a waste of money, so they just say "No." Cheap is the culture at Olympus. The Olympus culture does not encourage intelligent or original thinking. They are not entrepreneurial. Information systems are outdated. Communication is opaque at best. Management is remote and detached, direction is rarely explained or understood by employees, changes frequently. The company touts kaizen as part of its culture, however, they practice the art of denial and cover up.

Advice to Management

Change the culture, communicate more effectively. Invest in employees. Reduce layers of management. Clean house in Information Systems management, hire execs with up to date understanding of systems and technology.

    Pros

The pay is competitive, the facilities are very nice and most of the people working there are very nice to work with. In addition, it does seem like senior management has made an effort to improve the culture of Olympus. There are a lot of decent, hard working people at Olympus.

    Cons

The health insurance is great as long as you don't need anything more than a routine check up. If you end up going to the hospital, the annual deductible plus the coinsurance that you pay can add up to thousands of dollars. Also, beware of human resources. If you have a problem with your manager, HR is not there to protect you, they are going to look out for the managers. Regular employees are expendable.

    Pros

high quality imaging equipment. new technologies. They have a nice single port surgical system.
Surgeons often support the purchase of their equipment.

    Cons

multiple ethical issues through the years. Financial issues have now become much larger issue as well. Their pricing is always higher than the competition due to the more advanced imaging. This makes sales in this economy more difficult.

    Advice to Management

i would recommend that they also take the mandatory ethical training that they require their employees to take.
