Pros

The world of broadcast presents enormous opportunity for modernization. Omneon is trying very hard to create new products to take advantage of this opportunity to help broadcasters optimize their operations. The people working for Omneon are all very good people.

Cons

Currently Omneon is in a state of transition and several new senior managers have recently started that have little experience with the world of broadcast. There have been two small layoffs at the end of each of the last two quarters, the last exclusively focused on the engineering department.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on the customer and learn what it is they truly want.

    Pros

Thriving company with excited, motivated employees. Excellent management team. The regular company meetings and extensive SharePoint intranet result in great corporate communications, even on a global scale. Small enough to still be nimble.

    Cons

Cubicle hell. Work/life balance is definitely askew.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would ask them to think about why the revenue per employee is so high, and what the effect on the employees may be long term. But I would also praise them for their communications, entrepreneurial spirit and their openness.

    Pros

the salary is the best reason to work for.

    Cons

Horrible teamwork. Each member is technically good but lack of communication between them often causes stalls. The senior team members cant get along with each other. some of the people are old and there is very little documentation of the engineering effort by these people. As a result its extremely difficult for a newbie in the organisation. The old timers like things done their way and are not very flexible to work with. The company is so heavily dependant on the old timers that they can never be fired from their job. The product quality is extremely poor and the company can never get an ISO quality rating for the engineering effort. Its a very laid back lifestyle there and a startup in silicon valley can engineer the product in 2 years what folks at Omneon took 10 years to build. They are extremely slow in adopting newer technologies in the world. If you want to do cutting edge stuff, this is definately not the place.
The marketing / sales team is very aggresive and good. The company's credit for sucess certainly goes to the marketing and not to the engineering. The management is very conservative in their approach towards getting products out the door. The do not like taking risks. Not sure if this conservative approach and laid back style will take them far. A company like Avid may buy it and then kill it cause they may not be able to sustain such a company if the old timers leave. Its almost impossible to sustain the engineering without the old timers due to lack of documentation and lack of engineering processes which is a huge downside. There is not much thought process before hirring or firring employees. They have layed off employees on several occasions so watch out when you get an offer from them. There are very old timers with the company and these old timers can never be fired or else the company will be doomed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

change the culture. change your staff. take more risks.
