I have been working at Onondaga Community College full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Mostly dedicated faculty and staff. Really makes a difference in the lives of students who want an education.

Cons

Many students don't really want to be in school, and it can be frustrating. Administration is being taken over by bean-counters who care more about dollars than education.

Advice to Management

Letting the chair of the board appoint himself to a VP position was a big mistake.

    Pros

Work at Onondaga provides ongoing opportunities to help others, to encourage development of students, and to witness their personal growth. Good pay, benefits.

    Cons

Wholesale changes in leadership and seeming disregard for employees, and recognition of impact on students. Reduction in benefits packages, starting salaries not keeping up with cost of living increases. Dedicated staff.

    Advice to Management

Gradual changes based on real and thorough assessment, followed up with meaningful assessment of impact before making further, more drastic changes. Gain regular input from students and staff. Actually go to their worksites... be visible and listen... then use the information, credit them with their ideas if you implement them. Honor your people!
