Former Employee - Technical Support Engineer in Reading, England (UK)

I worked at OpenText full-time

Pros

- Company is doing well, they effectively acquire 2 companies a year on average, milk the maintenance, get rid of dead wood & duplicate services, and pour minimal R&D into new products
- Salary's are market average
- Stock is doing very well
- Benefits are on par with most US/Canadian software companies
- Majority of people have been there for a long time

Cons

- Support management are very clicky with each other, you will struggle to break into the group and therefore career in any aspect is very limited
- Agencies are reluctant to hire you of you worked here, they have a belief that majority of people lack skills suitable in other companies
- Most people don't leave because they have been there so long that they are scared to leave
- Young managers are often unprofessional & lack experience
- If you have been acquired, your best bet is to leave unless they offer you a good position, most of your team will eventually dissipate
- Culture is often lacking, good games room & breakout area, many events organised however very little acknowledgement of hard work and effort
- Products mostly cannot integrate with each other, company grows by acquisition with little thought on product integration, as such they sometimes have multiple products that do the same thing
- In Canada, this is a great place to work, don't be fooled by this in Reading or other Euorpean locations
- Treat employees with little respect

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to the employees and don't rest on the fact that the company doing so well is going to keep people here forever. Also pay more focus on the poor management in EMEA. Try 360 reviews to get a better understanding of what is really going on.

I have been working at OpenText full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    - have tools for individuals to do self study to improve their own knowledge
    - has an average health plan (but difficult to say as I think many companies are scaling back now)

    Cons

    - lack of direction if you are not in the "main" division
    - a lot of micro management from the current CEO - down to the hiring process for analysts and engineers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - get all the lay offs and restructuring done and move on already

    Doesn't Recommend
    Neutral Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO
