Third-rate software company that could have been so much better

I have been working at OpenText full-time

    Pros

Flexible about working hours so I could sometimes work at home, but this is at the discretion of your team-leader/manager. I have a great team-leader.
Free coffee. There are a couple of Tassimo brewers if you know where to look.

    Cons

    Lack of co-operation between teams.

Some team leaders don't care about quality, just deadlines.

Next to impossible to get anything innovative done.

Senior management seems completely ignorant of what really goes on at a grass roots level in the company. Its as they work for an entirely different OpenText than the rest of us. Clueless.

A mire of bureaucracy. Most of the administrivia that employees have to deal with is confusing, frustrating, and slow.

Ridiculous internal structure. People in one part of the company jet around the world doing this and that, and yet there is "no budget" to ship a small but essential piece of equipment from one office to another.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop expanding. Rewrite the software from the ground up to be adaptive and useful.
Pay attention to what the employees are saying, they are the people who do the real work at OpenText, not the management.

I have been working at OpenText full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

We are entering an exciting new phase as an organisation but that necessarily requires some change in both thinking and attitude. However the direction we are going is the right one even if the waters are a bit choppy just now

    Cons

A lot of the sense of opentext community seems to have left the business just now and there's a sense of all work no play which I believe that balance needs to change.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take action on the growing perception that there is little tolerance of the dissenting voice. Not all management actions are right and not all doubting Thomas's are wrong.
