I worked at Opera Solutions

Pros

Opera has a few good things going for it. Skybox seat at Madison Square Garden, somewhat flexible hours in the event that you need to get something done and come back to your work, and a very intelligent group of consultants- especially at the analyst level. Everyone was fun to talk with and well-traveled, all consultants were from the best schools and had great analytical abilities. Very few people were actually bad at their jobs at the analyst level.

Cons

This organization doesn't typically know how much money they will make. Since 2008, many projects became rev-share, the everyday lunches started getting cut (I know- a perk). We were paid below-market salaries with the expectation of higher bonuses, but then no bonuses ever came around for the class that entered in 2008. Salaries were cut 10%, healthcare by 50%. No matching 401k, hard hours until the work started stopping- and then no hours....

Extremely incompetent principals. Stunningly bad.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get some real people into principal roles, get better at giving REAL feedback, and be honest in town-hall meetings.

I have been working at Opera Solutions

    Pros

    Good training ground...
People are very smart which develops you through best practice...
If you want the opportunity and seize it, you get it...
    Room to shine...
    Honest feedback provided.

    Cons

Some partners are ridiculous in terms of expectations but you have to push back.
Overall compensation "philosophy" means low base has to be made up by high bonus to make you on par with the rest of hte consulting market. Implies constant hustling.
Staffing is a free market so if you are not 'high value' you sink.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Need to coach more
Need to communicate more. We are moving more towards that direction but have a long way to go.
