I have been working at Opower as an intern

Pros

Super casual and approachable workplace culture. Opower invests heavily in their employees from constant Opower U cross trainings to a fully stocked kitchen, espresso machine, catered lunches, and massages.

Cons

They are the smartest people in the room and they are the first to tell you.

    Opower: Software With a Purpose

I have been working at Opower full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The people are awesome. Every single employee I have worked with is top notch, never settling for less than the best. The mission is also incredibly motivating. Engineers can build software at many companies, but few offer the satisfaction that your work helps an important cause. In addition, DC is a great place to live.

    Cons

There are no obvious cons with Opower. The best one I can think of is a less than fully formed career advancement program. Opower is a small company, so it hasn't established or standardized how to get opportunities to move up in the company. Some departments are more ahead than others in this.

    I worked at Opower full-time

    Pros

You can feel good that the work you do helps people save energy, and through that, helps protect the natural environment.

    Cons

A lot of mediocre managers, no real career path/growth/opportunities, no real HR department, no 401(k) match, unimpressive salaries and stock options, very little diversity, headquarters is in suburban Virginia.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more grown-ups who know how to inspire, motivate, and manage staff. Be less passive-aggressive when working assumptions are challenged. Add women/people of color/gays to your all-male management team.
