OptumInsight – “They think they are a technology company, but fall down on the basics of software development.”

Pros

In my area there are opportunities to learn new technologies. Because of the association with United Health Care they do have access to significant resources when purchasing technology.There are some very intelligent people that are leaders in their particular fields.

Cons

they are owned by United Health Care which has the some of the worst health care ever experienced. Ingenix unfortunately is stuck with UHC health care, which has huge deductibles and is not friendly to families. UHC is not a technology company, but pushes their technology standards down onto Ingenix when they really are two very different companies with vastly differing needs.
Ingenix does a lot of software development, but for some reason can't seem to get the processes down. Methodologies that have been used for decades by other software development companies are either non-existent or are still being "discovered" at Ingenix.

Advice to Senior Management

Push to get off UHG health care. If you are technology company you need to offer better benefits to compete. Get some managers who know how software development works from beginning to end. There are people in the company who know the best way to develop software, but they don't seem to be the ones in Product Management positions...find out who they are and listen to them!
