I have been working at Oracle

Pros

Slow-moving pace means a great work-life balance. Also Oracle compensates very well, both with salary and other benefits.

Cons

There is a lot of political inertia here, it's a conservative culture, and ultimately this is a developer-driven organization. Designs always get cut and scaled back. Truly creative designs are unlikely to get built and shipped here. You will end up spending at least as much time on organization and project logistics/management as you do on design.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire some real project managers who can get software shipped. Expect more from the developers and don't let them slack off spending months on code architecture. And (of course) put more development resources into the UI. Don't prioritize functionality over usability every time. Without usability, the functionality may as well not even be there.

    I worked at Oracle

    Pros

Some of the brightest people I have worked around. People are focused and driven to succeed. Oracle hires some of the best and most talented people. Proud to have been part of a great team.

    Cons

Very competitive, almost back-stabbing culture. Information flow from one side of the business to the other is limited by design. The organization is designed to compete internally as much as it is to compete externally.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to what the field is sharing - market feedback and customer information

I have been working at Oracle

    Pros

    - Great location
    - Free and large gym
    - Good management and peers
    - Semi-casual dress
    - Good compensation
    - Nice weather

    Cons

    - Standards frequently change
    - Promotion process is disconnected from raise process
    - Promotion process is sometimes more tied to years of employment than to ability

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Decide on standards earlier in the development process and keep them static. Develop the application infrastructure ahead of instead of concurrently with the application that needs to use the infrastructure.
