Current Employee - Corrections Officer  in  Orlando, FL
Current Employee - Corrections Officer in Orlando, FL

I have been working at Orange County Government full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Steady work, no layoffs. Overtime becomes available somewhat commonly. Department started a program entitled Future Correctional Leaders, so they are somewhat willing to invest in their staff.

    Cons

NOT associated with the Orange County Sheriff so becoming a Deputy Sheriff requires an outside application. Because we're not associated with the Sheriff, there is a lack of respect, lack of professionalism, less pay, less opportunities to promote or transfer and it seems that the inmates have more rights then the officers. Pacifying the inmates is a tragic commonplace at OCCD. "What can I do to get you to comply with my order Sir?" is the administrations idea of maintaining order. Misconduct is prevalent along with the constant pettiness. "The Corrections Officer will retreat, if possible" is too widely used in the department's policies. 12 hour shifts often cause your personal/family life to suffer. I've frequently looked around at other department's pay and have found the pay of OCCD officers is among the lowest in the area. Smaller jails and larger jails pay their officers more than OCCD. Seminole, Osceola, Polk, Hillsborough, and Pinellas pay their Detention Deputies/Corrections Officers more than OCCD.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work to raise morale. You workers have been "hammered down" with so much change and restrictions. Listen to your subordinates! Make yourself seen. Show your support for the officers on the front line. Fight for your officers' rights, pay, benefits and for what's right and best for the department.

I worked at Orange County Government full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Lots of PTO and they don't ask questions when you want to use it. Great medical insurance. FRS.

    Cons

Cronyism and obvious racism ignored due to high hispanic work force. Not the best place for whites to work. Blanket raise policy. Horrible, mandatory, useless training session and meetings.
