Pros

Definintely opportunity to advance your career and work on some really great programs.

Cons

Orbital is a smaller aerospace company with a different culture than other companies I have worked for which has it's advantages but allows too much personal preference by senior management in terms of policy and process decisions.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend a little time on the floor and talk to your employees. Pay employees who travel for work sacrafice time away from family and home the full government per diem rate that they are entitled to.

A Good Balance Within Aerospace & Defense Companies

    Pros

Orbital is in a unique middle-ground when it comes to aerospace & defense companies - not too big, not too small. Big enough to have good benefits and opportunities, but not so big that individuals get lost in the machine

    Cons

A 'lean' low-cost emphasis means the support infrastructure and management approaches are not exactly cutting edge - or rocket science! There is not a lot of transparency 'up the chain'. The CEO Dave Thompson is a pretty good communicator but things are more opaque below him.

    Pros

The pay was OK. The work was interesting. It was close to my house. And that is really about it.

    Cons

In a word, management. First, it is a good ole boys club. They do not train their employees. They do not even abide by their own rules. For instance, during an unusually couple of weeks when the DC area was covered in snow, Orbital changed its snow policy by sending an email out at 8 pm on a Monday (which was a snow day) telling employees that although their snow policy clearly stated the campus would be closed the next day, employees who did not come into work would be forced to use vacation. Most people did not see the email until returning to work on Wednesday. Yeah, management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train your employees. Listen to your employees. Stop working to obviously fictitious schedules where people are more worried about keeping their head below the critical path than executing their tasks synergistically within the frame work of the overall program
