I worked at Orbital Sciences full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

The work was interesting, and the variety of work was nice. I've worked on scientific, commercial, and defense satellites. There were some truly talented/intelligent people working there.

Cons

In a word - Management. The place had a really toxic environment (i.e. CYA rather than team-oriented). There was no training and you are severely chastised when you fall short instead of being educated. Management would only pretent to care about their employees. Unethical. I saw very talented, experienced people get passed over for promotions for people who had no experience (for lack of a better phrase - these were the ass kissers).

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Replace 90% of your upper management. A majority of these people are unethical, money hungry, and/or on a power trip.

I worked at Orbital Sciences full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good working atmosphere. Interesting programs. High quality coworkers. Efforts are underway to improve engineering methods/procedures and tools.

    Cons

Some of the managers are of little or no help, and directors have little contact with employees. Too much work is still done ad hoc, and training is lacking when real procedures and new tools do arrive; those efforts sometimes seem half-hearted, as management talks a good game but falls down on execution.

Mobility between jobs is not as good as they claim. (When hired, I was promised a particular move after 1-2 years, but this never happened; I made two unsuccessful attempts, and management never lifted a finger to make it happen.)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend money on process/tools improvement. That means a decent amount of time from a few people on research before new tools are purchased, purchase of quality tools once the right ones are properly identified, giving people serious time to carefully craft new processes, and performing real, in depth training. You've been trying to do this on the cheap, and you get what you pay for.
