OSC, an OK place to work if you don't mind not really having true work life balance.

    I worked at Orbital Sciences

    Pros

Good location for those who like the warmth of the Phoenix desert area. Decent benefits package and 401k match. Dynamic work with broad spectrum of possible responsibilities for most engineers.

    Cons

Miserly with respect to pay raises (gave average of 2% in year where company posted record profits). Lacks true work life balance, pays lip service to work life balance but vilifies the use of compensation time, lumps sick days in with vacation in the classic “PTO” sham. Limits amount of PTO that can be accrued to 240 hours total. Detests the 9/80 or 4/10 work schedules and requires employees to use a week of vacation for “plant closure” between Christmas and new years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want to be like the big boys (LMCO, Boeing, Raytheon, etc) then you need to offer what they offer. Better vacation, holidays and work schedules. It's not like you're paying more to make up for the lack of these benefits.

Advancement based on your level of effort a double edged sword

I have been working at Orbital Sciences

    Pros

Environment: Professional, respectful coworkers form a cohesive community, with a few exceptions which are appropriately kept in check by good management. Mix of experienced and bright-eyed, busy-tailed workers provides learning opportunities for both. Teammates are particularly helpful and genuine people.

Management: Orbital fosters the rare species of management which takes suggestions and criticism from employees constructively. Minimal (employee) politics at lower levels. Multiple venues for upward feedback and regular reports from management on state of affairs.

Mobility and Recognition: Opportunity to focus on team or individual work styles, depending on group. There is plenty of lateral and upward mobility. Orbital is amenable to employees switching between departments and projects as long as qualifications suffice and the motivation to succeed is there. Grunt-work is well distributed amongst all levels of experience and not limited to greenies. Merit-based raises and merit-based promotions. You will be recognized for your hard work here if you are patient.

Great benefits and family-oriented atmosphere. Small company feel.

    Cons

Possibility for Career Stagnation. It is possible to go to sleep in your career here. Daily tasks range from mundane to ambiguous at times. You can also commit career suicide by choosing not to pursue advancement opportunities thereby pidgeon-holing yourself into very limited future employment prospects.

Difficult Personalities. A few employees resent new talent and tend to drive away top performers. Other employees (not all) consider mentoring a nuisance but still want the credit for it, so be prepared to mentor yourself (and take the heat for it) the majority of the time if you get one of these. Pettiness/gossip can easily damage reputations of those caught in the fray, so stay out of it.

Limited Innovation. Many projects advertise new and exciting responsibilities but end up being more of the same. Requests for a particular group or type of work may go unheeded by management, instead distracting you with a heavier workload. Not necessarily a good place for innovative, highly motivated workers or those requiring a challenging work environment.

Reduced Flexibility: Management has clamped down on Flex Time, and time in chair has taken a bigger role as a measure of your commitment. Limited work from home opportunity regardless of your job description seems archaic.

Anecdotal management style of customers flows downhill to create non-sensical, self destructive policies.

Not a good place for vulgar jokes or sardonic personalities.

Mandatory "Shut Down" week forces you to use your vacation hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the small company feel! Limit the bureaucracy.

No one star performer is worth stifling new talent over and over. Get rid of those who make a career out of sabotaging others before Orbital loses its edge - you know who they are.

Don't take away Flex Time and other perks from those who haven't abused them unless you are looking to reduce morale. Orbital can remain a great place to work as long as the good employees aren't punished for the shortcomings of the not so good ones...don't lose sight of what keeps Orbital an attractive place to work.
