Pros

Reliable amount of work. If you like management and leadership or Systems Engineering, it can be a great company. Decent repuation.

Cons

Not engineering or research centric. Interesting engineering work can be far and few between. The best work is fought over. Absolutely horrible situation for office space. Even the most senior engineers get cubicles or have to share offices. Oftentimes you move offices 4 times a year. Most engineering jobs available can amount to just pushing paper. Any innovation relies on superhero engineers. Space based work usually uses 20 year old technology.

Advice to Management

Create a R&D branch with real engineers and scientists. Orbital has forgotten how to innovate or create anything worthwhile.

    Pros

Technical nature of work, flexible schedule, variety of tasks and assignments, excellent management support, exciting and interesting product line (launch vehicles)

    Cons

Occasionally, there engineers, technicians, quality representatives, and program management are required to work at a launch site for an long period of time (~2 to 6 weeks).

    Advice to Management

I feel that Orbital Sciences leadership in general are helpful and are genuinely interest in company performance and employee satisfaction.

OSC, an OK place to work if you don't mind not really having true work life balance.

    Pros

Good location for those who like the warmth of the Phoenix desert area. Decent benefits package and 401k match. Dynamic work with broad spectrum of possible responsibilities for most engineers.

    Cons

Miserly with respect to pay raises (gave average of 2% in year where company posted record profits). Lacks true work life balance, pays lip service to work life balance but vilifies the use of compensation time, lumps sick days in with vacation in the classic “PTO” sham. Limits amount of PTO that can be accrued to 240 hours total. Detests the 9/80 or 4/10 work schedules and requires employees to use a week of vacation for “plant closure” between Christmas and new years.

    Advice to Management

If you want to be like the big boys (LMCO, Boeing, Raytheon, etc) then you need to offer what they offer. Better vacation, holidays and work schedules. It's not like you're paying more to make up for the lack of these benefits.
