Current Employee - Senior Oracle Database Administrator in Chicago, IL
Current Employee - Senior Oracle Database Administrator in Chicago, IL

I have been working at Orbitz Worldwide full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Orbitz is a company that understands that people have situations in life that in some cases may cause the employee to need a non-tradational method of continueing to complete thier work at Orbitz.
In several situations I have seen Orbitz support thier employees by offering flexible work hours and if needed the ability to work remotely.
Employees are grateful for the flexibility and the generousity of the company.
Productivity appears to increase for most people that are telecommuting.

Cons

In some cases, certain individuals did not do well in working remotely.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Perhaps as a cost savings, it may be beneficial to see if offering tele-commuting to the workforce as a more standard model, will pay off in spades for the company.

Strong company with excellent people and culture

Current Employee - Anonymous Employee in Chicago, IL
Current Employee - Anonymous Employee in Chicago, IL

I have been working at Orbitz Worldwide full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Collaborative teams, accessible and engaged senior management, regular communication to employees about company goals & priorities (to keep everyone on the same page), great work-life balance, excellent location in the heart of Chicago, seemingly high percentage of employees who have over 5 years of experience at the company

    Cons

In addition to the consumer facing brands such as Orbitz.com, CheapTickets and ebookers, OWW has several B2B units (Orbitz for Business, Orbitz Worldwide Private Label, etc.) that take a back seat to the more visible parts of the organization. At least internally it would be helpful to keep even the B2B divisions at the forefront of employees' minds, considering their importance to the company's overall bottom line.

    Great MBA Internship

Current Employee - MBA Intern in Chicago, IL
Current Employee - MBA Intern in Chicago, IL

I have been working at Orbitz Worldwide as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

This was a great MBA internship: I had a high-visibility project that worked on the two main strategic focuses of the organization, I worked with a young and talented team, and I was given a lot of creative license and autonomy. Not to mention the company is fun overall--has great outings; good perks like free breakfast, coffee, and soft drinks; foosball & ping pong tables; and a casual work environment.

    Cons

Sometimes you have to seek out your own challenges. It's easy to get too relaxed in such a casual environment. Secondly, the company hasn't been profitable for a few years, and so it is an "enter at your own risk" sort of experience. I believe that they will turn that around with the great things coming up in the pipeline, but it's something to be conscious of.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want to create good "T-shaped" individuals, maybe make a formal rotation program, or a "job-shadow" program where you can continue to grow individuals' breadth of knowledge of the organization while also diving deep into one (or many) teams. Continue to focus on your assets like brand recognition, top talent, and a huge volume of data to differentiate yourself from competitors and move ahead of just scraping by to actually making a profit.
