I worked at Oregon State University as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Relaxed about hours- clearly, they understand that students have constraints on their time.

    Cons

Archaic pay system - explicitly required my Social Security card (rather than alternate documentation like a passport) for two separate student jobs only a year apart.

  2. Oregon State University is thriving - great people, great benefits, great town.

I have been working at Oregon State University full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

For my specific position, I have flexible schedule, autonomy, interesting problems to solve, cutting edge research problems to be involved with, and am surrounded by very smart people. Great benefits, including almost 5 weeks of vacation no matter how long you've worked here. Health insurance fantastic.

    Cons

Salary lower than private industry. Most of my software development work is solitary these days and I miss the developer team experience. Willamette valley is overcast much of the year, spectacular otherwise. Job satisfaction is most likely highly specific to position. My boss expects me to do a lot of self management, which is most often liberating, but at times challenging.
