Good company with great mission, but don't idealize it too much, or you'll be disappointed.

I have been working at Organic Valley

Pros

Great mission - supporting organic family farms. Great products. Good, honest people. They are pretty understanding about balancing life & work. Wonderful location if you want to live in rural america and enjoy winter weather.

Cons

Headquartered in the middle of nowhere. You must either live in rural area or commute minimum of 2 hours per day to live in a larger community. You must endure Wisconsin winters.
Work for farmers so benefits, salaries, and perks are conservative.
Grew really fast so talent and processes didn't keep up.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

You're doing a decent job of bringing in new talent from outside the area and company.

I have been working at Organic Valley full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great employee benefits with a mission focused on the farmer as well as the health of the land and the people

    Cons

Some growing pains going on - clash of culture with corporate processes/changes It's not a little company anymore and people need to get on board instead of using the culture as a crutch. Change is inevitable

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire from within before looking externally!

  2. There's no place like Organic Valley. It's truly a special organization to work for.

I have been working at Organic Valley full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Overall, folks at Organic Valley are truly happy to work here. We're a billion dollar cooperative, not a corporation. The list of "pros" for working at OV could go on forever-- No dress code (shoes are optional), free organic products at work, an amazing organic employee cafe, an onsite fitness center, flexible scheduling, endless training and development opportunities, company stock options, profit sharing, and most importantly.... Knowing that you're working towards a shared mission in promoting organic food through environmental and social stewardship. PS: Our C-E-I-E-I-O, George Siemon, is probably one of the most chill, laid back CEO's you'll ever find at a $1 billion organization.

    Cons

Organic Valley is headquartered in rural southwestern Wisconsin. The nearest metropolitan area, La Crosse, is about 40 minutes away. However, many employees commute from the city to HQ via Organic Valley's van pool network.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work. Management has been able to preserve Organic Valley's unique culture AND rapidly grow from a small operation to an international organic leader.
