I have been working at Orion Health

Pros

See another world's culture at work.

Cons

There is no quality control in this place of work and everyone expects a hack to fix problems. People who realize this avoid this kind of work like the plague and shove it onto someone else who doesn't know that poorly built products are being released regularly. One of the most political workplaces with backstabbing everywhere. Does not pay a salary/benefits representative of the market.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire some technical people who know what they are doing and control the workplace deviance. Reward those who are efficient and competent. Take them out of the grind of working with other employess who are jealous of their abilities.

I worked at Orion Health full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The opportunites for a graduate software engineer going into a development team are great if you end up in the right team, and there are more right teams than wrong. But beware the services behemoth if your not a com sci major, you will be well and truly in the deep end, but can learn a huge amount. If you are a com sci major, you haven't made the cut and will have to work very hard to get out.

There are plenty of talented, awesome, passionate people to learn from. Orion has critical mass in Auckland, its the biggest NZ owned software company in the market so it attracts a lot of great talent. Most of the joy to be had working at Orion is when a great team comes together and builds something special.

While the new management hierarchy can be pretty formal, if you ever get the chance you can actually tell Ian what you think, within reason, without fear. He loves the company, and loves passionate people.

Very little corporate nonsense. Open culture. Good agile practice. Great code review culture.

    Cons

I've said above there are great opportunites for young developers at Orion but unfortunately if you are more senior the opportunites are less unless you can get yourself into one of the teams breaking new ground and you will likely bear the brunt of the constant redirection, and shifting deadlines.

Being 'Ianed' is in all honestly a phrase that all new Orionites learn quickly. The management structure disappears when Ian turns up to a Sprint review, starts talking about UI improvements/his vision for the product/whats wrong with the current roadmap.

Orion is hopelessly addicted to consulting revenue, do not believe any of the product company hype. Its projects, projects, fire fighting then back to projects.

Sales incentivization is all over the show, leading to salespeople receiving chunky commisions on projects that lose the company money.
