Former Employee - Copywriter in Salt Lake City, UT

I worked at Overstock.com full-time (less than a year)

Pros

Company spirit, team camaraderie, nice co-workers, great break room with fun activities to de-stress, employees are valued, lots of downtime, free to listen to music/watch internet TV/movies while working in this position, easy to advance, pay for this position is decent, management was pretty good when I was there

Cons

Lots of downtime (this can be good and bad in my opinion), location of warehouse offices, position is very monotonous and dull, advancements only seem to be reserved for the "boss's pets"

I have been working at Overstock.com full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

In general the people are smart an good to work with. Everyone wants to do their job well and, with minor exception, has the ability to do so.

    Cons

The senior management (VP level and above, with a few directors in the mix) cannot stay focused on an idea long enough to see it through. By the time a first release happens they have already lost interest and started to prioritize the next new thing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a way to focus on a set of goals that are doable with your resources (people, time, ability, opportunity). The constant shuffling of people because a new crazy idea popped up on the radar makes for a discouraging work environment.

I have been working at Overstock.com as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Excellent company culture. The company does not micromanage its employees. Creativity and career growth are enoucraged. Work environment is clean and very serious with maintaining employee safety.

    Cons

Most people in the company spend way too much time sitting (and gaining weight). It would be nice to see those desks that can convert between standing and sitting positions become the standard desk.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Although the customer services representatives are recieving wages that match the going market price an increase in salary would not hurt.
