I have been working at PA Consulting full-time for more than a year

Pros

I have done so many different things since joining and have been involved in many innovative and high profile projects. Everyone is willing to hear your ideas and there is a genuine desire to try new ideas and methods. The management treat people as equals almost from day 1, and it would be hard to find a better bunch to be stuck in a long workshop session with.

Cons

Hours are very variable, but nothing nutty for a consultant. There can be a lot of annoying red tape in getting internal stuff done...

    Reasonable mid Tier firm

Current Employee - Managing Consultant in City of London, England (UK)

I have been working at PA Consulting full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

PA generally hires experienced professionals, often from industry which means that it is a stable, sensible and credible advisory environment.

    Cons

The client base often feels too narrow, a few large accounts dominate at any particular time. There is little process or approach to fall back on when delivering assignments over and above a very generic model. Generally top tier firms have much more mature tools and approaches for solving even niche problems, utlimately providing a better outcome.
Two odd tensions exist for those looking to progress. The company is conservative and fails to exploit the fact that it does not have public shareholders demanding short term results. Partners very much eat what they kill but the lack of desire to make a strategic investment means that all Partners at some stage seem to run no more than a corner shop portfolio of a few £100k. The theoretical advantage of the Partner role being more entrepreneureal that other firms is severely constrained by the corporate conservatism and lack of ability to aggregate competeing Partners and practices.
