Pros

It's quite satisfying when you are able to help someone who truly needs it. It is equally as satisfying to shut off benefits for others when they don't follow the rules.

Cons

Impatient clientele can often lead to unpleasant conversations. Training process has the tendency to get bogged down in details.

Advice to Management

Streamline training.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at PA Department Public Welfare full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The benefits package for the state is hard to beat. IMCW is an entry level position that can lead to other lateral transfer possibilities within the Commonwealth.

    Cons

Caseworkers are tasked with complex work projects; however, lack the ongoing training to perform it properly - this is evident by the amount of QC errors that occur yearly. Training is mostly delivered through a web-based format and there is no instrument available that truly checks on the employee's learning ability. The training program looks like nice wallpaper; however, it lacks the walls and foundation to really hold it up. Management takes no interest in mentoring employees. Managers seem to take on the duties of the Executive Officer (who is responsible for that office) since they will try to manage and disseminate information to workers who not under their direct supervision. There is a lack of organizational identity and the employee's performance evaluations are sub par. This all stems from a stagnate compensation program, poor managerial leadership and a thin budget that prevents new employees from being hired to increase the office's compliment.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to: take some leadership courses, learn how to effectively communicate with you subordinate staff, learn the principles of conflict management, build a team and not a divide between units, use better qualitative and quantitative data when conducting performance evaluations, stop saying "I don't have time for this." when "this" is your job.
