Current Employee - Project Manager in Bellevue, WA

I have been working at PACCAR full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Well respected brand
Company does make money
Do promote education amongst employees
A good place to retire - if you are really old, and need a place to squat - this is it.

Cons

Very Autocratic
Employees have absoutly no voice in anything - unless you are a manager - you better be a great order taker, and have no thoughts of having to think on your own work or ideas.
Other than senior management - this is a mindless place to work
There is ZERO chance of making any kind of a difference unless you are Sr. Director level or above - and even then, your ability to influence is minimal - everything comes from the top-down.
Prescribed vacations - even for salaried employees - they force vacations on salaried employees in order to make numbers - feels a bit like working at McDonalds at times
I would never recommend this as a good place to make much of a difference

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Empower employees to do great work - managers who have their positions need to continue to earn them versus seeing being a manager as a rite fo passage. Time to self-reflect, and clean house to get some younger perspective - managers are all way too old and are out of touch with current technology and styles

    Pros

Solid financials; global experience; tuition reimbursement

    Cons

Management by fear. Expect to be disrespected as a person and professional by the most senior management. Human Resources is not an option if you have workplace issues. Very poor opportunities if you are not part of the old boy's club.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit managing and try leading. Your employees do not need to be talked down to and berated.

Stable company with pension, a place to settle down

I worked at PACCAR full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Fixed working hours, usually no over-time is expected. At HQ, the building goes empty after 5:15pm. It's a place where it's ok not to work competively against your peers.

    Cons

Fixed schedule. The company's culture ensures that any responsible employee would feel guilty going to a doctor appointment or stay home to care for a sick kid.
No way to work from home. You can say you're working from home, and the reality is that nobody would believe you actually worked. The infrastructure doesn't really support it, and management doesn't encourage it.
Suit and tie every single day, including Friday. The chairman does watch the dress code closely. Sometimes memos go out in the summer time to remind ladies not to wear certain shoes, and nylons are required. Many more silly rules!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Respect your employees a bit more, have some trust and enpower them. Bonus should be tied to performance review. It's not a Christmas gift from the 6th floor. Increase the pay to keep the good people around longer.
