Current Employee - Calibration Engineer in Mount Vernon, WA
Current Employee - Calibration Engineer in Mount Vernon, WA

I have been working at PACCAR as a contractor (less than an year)

Pros

Great group of people to work with, good work life balance, great support for the work you're performing. Company is great at making money. Best benefits by a large margin over anything I've experienced elsewhere or heard of.

Cons

Pay structure is weak and breeds an overly large middle management for employees to get raises. Not enough budget for tools, manpower, or testing to be competitive in marketplace. Lots of yes men on the corporate ladder which makes it difficult for positive change to be implemented. The chairman is literally crazy... and takes all his vehicular inspiration from a 1990's Lexus.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on your Miracle based planning. Don't forget to schedule for tours which happen 145 days out of the year. If you're 1 month away from launching a product that you've been working on for the past 2 years, don't PREDICT to get 80% of the work load completed in that month. Validating a product for 1 month on 15 trucks is not Validation.

I worked at PACCAR as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Learn a lot about the company's business and products. Supervisors and co-workers are always willing to help out or teach you if you don't know how to do something

    Cons

Work can get repetitive. Conservative environment. People would prefer to move around and get to work on different parts of the truck

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more flexible, it seems like change is resisted. Just because something works doesn't mean it can't be done better

PACCAR- An engineering environment where hard work, initiative, and technical expertise does not pay off.

I worked at PACCAR full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

An Engineer can make some big technical and project accomplishments- but will receive very little reward for the efforts.

    Cons

You can make huge accomplishments at PACCAR, be well known throughout the organization and industry, have a great reputation, and then never get promoted. There is no doubt a glass ceiling at the organization. Additionally, the chairman's behavior does encourage bullying behavior to trickle down through the lower ranks. Typically when a mid level manager is brought into the divisions from a corporate role, childish bullying tactics prevail. If you are good at what you do, you will have no opportunity for advancement- it will be a career dead end.
If you do leave PACCAR as an employee, be prepared for feeble attempts at smearing of your name. People are so childish at the company that after a respected employee who has proven accomplishments leaves, the lower level corporate minions stab them in the back.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Break the culture- eliminate problem middle managers. Nothing to save in the current environment. Bullying, backstabbing, politics, lack of recognition for hard work, poor communication, lack of respect of employees, lack of diversity. Someday its going to catch up with you.
