I worked at PATH full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Stimulating academic environment
Great human talent. The best co-workers I have ever had
Opportunity to be creative and explore your own path
No supervisors. You have performance leaders who help you with career goals, but you don't have a boss breathing down your neck.
Great international recognition. People love PATH's concept. They market themselves pretty well.

    Cons

Although PATH is well funded, it is still an NGO and the challenges of working for a non profit also apply to PATH: everything depends on funding. Sometimes you end up doing what the donor wants you to do and not what is the best for people. Unfortunately the impact that PATH has made has not really been much. Not a lot of technologies have been introduced in the field.
Some departments need to be shaken up. Some people have been in the organization too long. New ideas would strengthen the organization.
HQ heavy. There are ~ 18 offices around the world, but HQ has the majority of employees. Funds sometimes stay in Seattle because there are too many people in HQ. Offices should have more independence and HQ should be there to support them and not the other way around.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let's pass more resources to field offices. HQ should be there to support them and not the other way around.
Don't be afraid to push for more impact. R&D is good, but if there is no successful scale up of technologies there is no story to tell. PATH needs to get better at implementing.

A solid organization that does superb work in the field but does a poor job engaging junior and mid-level staff.

    I worked at PATH

    Pros

PATH does really interesting and effective global health work. It seems like a great place to work for more senior technical experts. However, management does a poor job engaging younger staff in meaningful work.

    Cons

Bureaucratic; little acknowledgement for progress and success in work; does not inspire creativity; little room for growth and promotions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Inspire and encourage junior and mid-level staff.
