I have been working at PNNL full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Management willingness to listen and work with you. Diversity of work and availability of technical resources and ability to expand your career.

Cons

National budgets are terrible and get renegotiated every year. Always having to find new work for yourself can be difficult especially when money is tight. There is no "idle" time work budgets.

I have been working at PNNL full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

PNNL has an excellent flex-time program. They mean it when they offer the employee the freedom to adjust the schedule as needed. They also make it easy to work from home if you need to and are currently exploring wider use of tele-commuting. Your peers will be some of the brightest minds in the field and they are very focused on delivering for the client. I also am pleasantly surprised that the bureaucracy is not as bad as in other quasi-government organizations.

    Cons

Salaries are not as competitive. The trade-off is the work atmosphere and flex-time. They are probably going to be in the lower third of a salary range for your given level. This will be hard to accept if you get an offer, but i have not heard many regrets after someone comes on--even though they were dissatisfied with the salary. Another con is that you are generally on your own if funding for your program or project decreases or the project ends. You have to work hard to build your network and showcase your talents so that you can find another project if that happens.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to protect the flexibility you offer employees. It is one of the greatest benefits that i did not appreciate until coming on board.

I have been working at PNNL full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great work environment. Good people to work with. Not too stressful. Great work/life balance.

    Cons

They get away with paying a lower salary than other similar organizations because the cost of living in the Tri-cities is so low.
