PRA is becoming another PPD

I have been working at PRA

Pros

Despite the poor economy, PRA is hiring several new employees. Due to the industry-wide shortage of CRAs, PRA actively recruits CRAs and has a couple of programs where In-house CRAs can bridge into a CRA position. Many employees, however, leave the company shortly after becoming CRAs.

Cons

The company is extremely top-heavy, continually hiring senior-level employees (vice presidents and senior directors) while laying off billable (to clients) employees. In addition, despite that the PRA had one of it's best years, the company didn't give bonuses; however, the CEO's direct reports all received promotions (to Exec VP.) The culture at PRA is to continually step on those below you and to screw the people equal to and above you to get ahead. Like most CROs, it's also extremely female-heavy.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go back to PPD. Several years ago, PRA was known as a good company because they treated the employees very well. In recent years, several people from PPD came to PRA in senior managment positions, including the CEO. Now, PRA cares very little about their employees.

    I worked at PRA

    Pros

Flextime, benefits, ability to work from home, Bridge program, PTO days, expense reimbursement, tuition payout up front, ability to work on multiple studies at one time.

    Cons

Too many cliques, many leads and managers have no prior managerial experience but are allowed to derail your professional growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to employees, be a part of the solution not the problem. Stop leaving the hen house unattended. Train staff and prepare them for leadership roles. The face of clinical trials is rapidly changing, get in the game or don't play.

I have been working at PRA

    Pros

Employees are bright and driven people

    Cons

Management is extremely disrespectful towards employees.
Management communication and interaction with employees is incredibly poor, and in some instances borders on lying
Management has stated "everyone is replaceable"
Hard work and contribution are not rewarded
To be successful here, you should do only your assigned work and nothing else, do not express an opinion, do not attempt to distinguish yourself
Clearly, there is very little incentive for employees to go above and beyond assigned tasks, this is not a company which utilizes the talent and energy of its employees
Whoever said that PRA only wants robots is exactly right
I also agree with the level of secrecy about routine matters - PRA is very patronizing towards employees when it comes to communication
