I worked at PROS

Pros

Interesting and smart colleagues
Good customers, challenging issues and business problems to solve
Collaborative atmosphere, but still requires a lot of thought leadership and individual stamina

Cons

Very political atmosphere. Employees are overworked. Company takes on projects/contracts with unrealistic scope and expects staff to do whatever it takes to get it done. Staff overworked and spread thin over many different projects/initiatives, including a lot of travel. Very little recognition of a job well done, and the bonus structure in non-existent. Recession cutbacks on benefits are not reinstated. PROS expects you to be grateful for just having a job. Career path and advancement is not clear or taken seriously. Favoritism seems to exist. PROS does a good job at hiring college graduates with no experience and calling them Pricing Professionals in front of customers.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are managers at PROS who don't even know how to run the company's business product: pricing software. Management should focus on equal pay, professional development and career structure at all levels in the organization.

Good place to work, but still way behind in Software Engineering practices.

    Pros

Some managers have different control/management styles and at the same time some teams have very tight timelines, so if you extremely unlucky and fall on a team that has those two characteristics, work-life balance can be hard to achieve. Otherwise, as long as you work for 8 hours, you're fine. Working from home or even working remotely is possible once you've built trust and demonstrated to be a valuable asset.

    Cons

As a software development shop, they still have a lot to learn from the industry. Some (or most) of the tools and technology they use is past their prime. Don't expect to be able to suddenly start changing the tools and practices radically.

That being said, I left shortly after the new, young CEO was named, and a lot of things were changing quickly, so it could be possible that the development process will change soon too.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Watch out for bosses who micro-manage. On one occasion a manager confessed to me that he was spying on me.
