Cons

Departments need to horizontally integrate and re-align by customer processes
Directors, and above, too removed from employees and work

Define the right outcomes rather than lecture
Build on employee's strengths - stop trying to fix weaknesses

    I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric

    Pros

    Work life balance, tuition reimbursement, amazing health insurance, opportunities to try different jobs, the employee resource groups (like clubs) are a great way to meet others in the organization, reward bonus are appreciated, new CEO Tony Early seems to be putting emphasis on "owning" the Co's mistakes (refreshing and different mentality compared to former leadership)

    Cons

    Hard to get promoted, mind numbing bureaucracy, too many layers of management leads to inflexibility and inefficiency, no one wants to take responsibility for decisions, "the way its been done mentality", many workers don't contribute because they can get away with it and/or they are "riding it out" until they get their pension.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    I think the views at this company are way too short sided . .always looking at staying on budget for the year but not realizing that a lack of investment in infrastructure costs you more in long run!!! Directors generally don't look at long term costs. Why would they. . .there is no incentive for them to. The lack of investment is infrastructure is is true for software (dating to early 1990's), wires& pipes (San Bruno), and people (especially younger generations in professional roles). I've worked at other organizations and have never seen such poor IT systems. . .don't they realize it costs the company and ratepayers so MUCH more money in the end by not investing in systems with today's technology, incentives for next generation of employees, and most vitally the safety of our customers?

    Pros

    Great benefits, good pay, good work hours.

    Cons

    Too many senior management layers, too dependent on outside consultants. Poor change management practices. Too much fire-fighting on urgent issues. No planning. Bureaucracy doubles the cost of most internal work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Focus on the core business. Replace board members with business leaders with innovation and vision. Officer compensation packages are obscene. Micro-managers in middle management are killing your potential.
