I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric

Pros

Benefits, good pay, stability, lots of opportunities for inside transfer. RDO is a real plus. Some teams are very good to work on. Exciting projects. Company is very focused on your safety, it is actually a high priority and you are encouraged to get as much safety training as possible. Stable company with good underlying business plan. You can telecommute pretty often. You get a bunch of sick time, so much so, thats it nearly impossible to use it all.

Cons

Hours can be long, outdated technology, silos exist in some spots. Can be highly political at times and you need to steer clear of that. Some outdated technology exists and that can be a real pain. Alot of sites that you may need to travel to, some groups very difficult to interface with. Vacation time is accrued as you go, not in one lump sum. It is only 10 days. Number of paid holidays could be higher.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Track closer to corporate goals. Talk alot, but real action is slow in coming.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric

    Pros

Many of the technical folks are fantastic at their work and are good people. The employees who actually do the work are amont the best and brightest.

    Cons

Senior management promotes a military-style bureaucracy, and are concerned with only with how much they can take from the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Step aside and let caring folks who actually know the business take over. Your so-called "transformation" process has failed, and all the problems which transformation was supposed to fix have gotten worse.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric

    Pros

The best reasons to work at Pacific Gas and Electric are, what i would consider, the most important things while looking for a job.

The starting compensation is very competitve, the benifits package is very nice, 401k matching is available and eventhough it isnt the highest matching i have seen there is also a pension. Tuition refunds are available as well as many other little perks.

The work/Life balance is among the best, with the flexible 9-80s schedule, every other week is a four day week which is a beautiful thing and allows for a much more manageable home life.

    Cons

Well most of the downsides i can list, i havent really seen, but i have heard through heresay. So I will mention those.

People who have been in the company formany years have said that their salaries have not continued to stay competitive over the years, I have yet to find this true but that is due to my relatively short amount of time at the company.

The only other negative thing i can think about the company is union involvement, namely ESC.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior Management could address the fact that the staff (in engineering, but also in other fields) is mainly composed of baby boomers and green 22 year olds. As of yet they have brought up this issue, but have not proposed a time table for knowledge transfer sessions or more appropriate training.
