I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric

    Pros

Lots of great people committed to their jobs, customers and company. Great place for learning about energy and utilities. Good training opportunities.

    Cons

Management often more focused on pleasing the level above them, rather than the people reporting to them

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Slow down and push back (gracefully) on senior management to protect your teams

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Laid back atmosphere with a great work life balance. You can work a 8 nine hour days and get a "RDO" (Rotational Day Off). That basically means you get to have a three day weekend twice a month. You won't be paid the same as working for a software company since you work for a IT department for a utility company. But if you want stability and want to be lazy this is the place for you.

    Cons

IT talent is sub par at best. Employee's have to try hard to get fired so there is no motivation to keep up with the pace of technology. A majority of the IT staff is over the age of 50 and hesitant to adapt to new technologies. Best coding practices are not enforced and a majority of the coding is done by contractors. Contractors stay for extended periods of time sometimes over five to ten years. Recently, they require contractors to be released after two years. But this just means they switch from one department to the other.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Neutral Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO
