I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

recession-proof business; interesting changes in the sector (smartgrid etc); industry's aging workforce means many entry level opportunities; unions for all field and skilled labor; good benefits for all full time employees; good perqs and bonus structure for management (non-union)

Cons

complicity & passivity pervade management & corp services; field techs & customer service are better as they are on the front lines but the overall culture suffers badly from a regulatory environment that guarantees profit and quasi-monopoly. all competition then, instead of to earn market share, is internal and political, creating a myopic focus on the shareholder and the regulator at the expense of the ratepayer; borderline corrupt in places

Advice to ManagementAdvice

volunteer to cede all program management back to the state for open bidding and focus on managing and maintaining assets ("back to pipes & wires")

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Pay, benefits, and employee discounts. You also get to work with some really great people who care about the work that they do.

    Cons

Lack of training, lack of concern to the environmental impact caused by construction (a very weak procedure put in place), management has this "us against them" attitude towards union employees which make communicating concerns a tedious task, and nepotism is often tolerated, and dare I say, practiced among the ranks of management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are a lot of companies out there that issue psychological testing for managerial employees for a very good reason.. Just a thought.

Company needs a new strategy for middle management

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The benefits are pretty good, and the pay for management is average. If you didn't go to college, this is a great place to make good money, since unionized field workers often make much more than their non-union supervisors. People are generally nice and want to get along. Lots of training opportunities, volunteer opportunities and education reimbursement. Upper management is competent.

    Cons

Don't expect to innovate here. Not much promotion from within. Highly political and bureaucratic management environment. Very hierarchical, and management expects automatic respect and deference just because of their titles, rather than earning respect through actions and leadership qualities. Mid-level management is especially poor and typically not qualified or trained for leadership. The rare, natural leaders are quickly promoted into upper management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend significant time identifying talent within your lower "management" ranks and promoting them into middle management positions. Look for well educated, intelligent individuals with a good mixture of technical expertise and leadership experience and/or potential, and give them challenging leadership roles.
