  1. Many individuals there lack good business sense. There is an awful lot of grant money wasted

    Pros

Very much able to set your own schedule. The pay compared to some other larger research organizations is equitable and benefits plans are excellent.

    Cons

A blend of staff who don't necessarily have the education and/or competency to be running research projects. Basic tenants of survey research and methodologies are not understood. Routinely protocols and fundamental Human Subject provisions to protect data and people are mismanaged. HR is operating in the dark ages - no real innovation, just a cookie cutter administrative paper pusher dept.

    Advice to Management

Instead of remaining complacent in terms of attracting and retaining individuals who have tried and true management experience and a modem of understanding of the intricacies of survey methodology - recruit the best and the brightest. Don't hire Suzy Q because she babysat for you as a teenager and now is all grown up and doesn't have a career path to speak of.

  2. Great place to begin a career in research for social good, especially for junior scholars and researchers.

    Pros

Flexible work schedule, good work-life balance, opportunity to be very hands-on in a variety of research projects

    Cons

Pay is lower than in other comparable fields, though that's mostly New Mexico, and not PIRE's issue.

    Advice to Management

    Be more direct and hands-on.
