I worked at Pacific Sunwear full-time for more than a year

Pros

The transition in fashion is key for people working in visuals and is a great challenge.

Cons

Huge turnover and not good at employee retention. Company is disorganized and unmotivating, any contests are inconsistent and don't allow much growth. Pay is not great either

Advice to ManagementAdvice

A lot of time was spent on transitioning the company to something new and fresh with a boutique approach as far as customer service. It works, but because of turnover, training has laxed.

Hectic, lots of micromanaging, but no support for SMs

Former Employee - Store Manager in Wisconsin Dells, WI

I worked at Pacific Sunwear full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    Pay is decent
    no mandatory 50 hour workweeks
    laid back atmosphere
    discounts

    Cons

Conference call after conference call after conference call.
    Unrealistic sales expectations.
Hard to make your part time employees care when you won't pay them more than minimum wage despite prior experience.
    ZERO PAYROLL ALLOCATION

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

INVEST IN SOME PAYROLL. It's hard to focus on selling when you're alone in the store 60 percent of the time. Pay part time employees more if the have retail experience. Look at some demographs and realize the type of market you are in, then base sales goals on that.

PacSun HQ could be a great place to work, but mediocre management makes it more challenging than it needs to be.

I have been working at Pacific Sunwear for more than a year

    Pros

    * There are lots of opportunities/projects that would look good on your resume
    * Upper, upper management (CEO, CFO, SVP's) are pretty impressive - smart people doing a great job
    * Compensation and general perks are good, especially considering company is struggling financially
    * Good sample sales! Decent employee discount.
    * Fun, laid-back working environment
    * Majority of coworkers are enjoyable and fun to work with.
    * While watching expenses, company hasn't gone into penny pinching mode (which is miserable) - there are still celebrations with food and alcohol...that is, you can still have fun at PacSun!
    * You can get promoted rather fast if you stick with it and have good relationships.
    * Decent amount of exposure to leadership

    Cons

    * Old-fashioned in terms of organizational strategy - jobs are loosely defined and roles and responsibilities are changed too frequently and without enough thought.
    * There are certain old-timers that seem to have been promoted just because of time served rather than real talent/aptitude.
    * There doesn't seem to be an emphasis on building management skills in the company. There is very little feedback on job performance, goal setting isn’t taken seriously and it’s very hard to get time with your manager.
    * Not enough delegation – too many problems caused by managers trying to own everything themselves when they do not have the information and/or time needed for good results.
    * Recruiting is very slow to fill open spots.
    * “Mean” managers are tolerated resulting in employees not expressing their ideas and opinions (there are not very many of them)
    * 2 weeks of vacation is not enough - especially when time off around Holidays is slim (day after Thanksgivig is not a paid holiday)
    * Left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing and sometimes doesn't know what the left hand is doing either.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put more emphasis on teaching people how to be good managers and inspire creativity in their employees. Think about giving us more vacation time. Build a stronger HR organization that can bring the company up to speed in terms of organizational structure and management theory.

CEO is doing a great job - keep PacSun a fun place to work and continue all of the great communication with everyone at all levels. Keep our emphasis on what makes us money; don’t let us get distracted by the pet peeves or special interests that don’t really add to the bottom line. Make PacSun special again and they will come!
