I have been working at Parkland Health & Hospital System full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The pay is decent, depending on how quickly you advance. You can advance and get leadership positions if you get in with the right people. Tuition reimbursement still available.

    Cons

Very unorganized and reactive instead of proactive when it comes to handling issues and changing policies and procedures. Constantly implementing new policies and procedures then change them the next week. Too many "managers" "directors" "vice presidents" who sit on conference calls all day and go to meetings. You will never see them lay hands on a patient or show their faces to the front line staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Come out of your office, get off the phone, shut down excel and shake hands with your nurses and better yet, your patients. Put on some scrubs and take some vital signs. Ask the nurses what makes sense and what works and how to solve all the problems instead of sitting around a big conference table with catered lunch. Stop making twenty different audits and reports every week for the nurses and nurse supervisors to complete. That is just a bandaid on a gaping wound. Get to the root of the problem and be a part of the solution.

I worked at Parkland Health & Hospital System full-time

    Pros

The best aspects of working at Parkland are the patient population, the programs, and that it is affiliated with a university (UTSW).

    Cons

Don't believe what you read if it is positive about Parkland. Some of the worst aspects of working at Parkland is everything else: dangerously low morale; lack of professionalism, collaboration, transparency, meaningful accountability, consistency; patient-centered approaches to care, professional growth and opportunity, workplace fairness, etc.It is a dangerous place for both patient and caregiver. Don't do it!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Leave and let new blood reorganize and operate Parkland (period).
