Pros

The Sydney office has a young expat culture with a work hard play hard ethos. Professional work is rewarding, if you can put up with the crap from senior management.

Cons

A real sick management culture. Work place bullying is the norm, with innuendo about preferred results rather than an outright direction -- even with the messaging from 'head office' about 'moving towards blue' friendly, inspirational office management styles. The internal assessment process is a farce -- you must leave PB to get the salary and job recognition. A real management shake-up is required.

Advice to Management

Too much internal back patting going on -- recognise your internal poor performers and ditch them. And RAMPP. I don't care how much you invested to build the software internally. It is abysmal.

    Pros

Decent Pay and Benefits Nice Offices, comfortable working environment Clear communication and (reasonably) smooth transition after being bought by Balfour Beatty

    Cons

Opportunity for advancement - you can advance, but expect to 'put in your time' 'All sticks and no carrots' management style Amount of time-off and work/life balance is lacking - Don't be surprised if you're asked to bring a laptop and blackberry on vacation 'just in case' and you're expected to return calls as if you're at the office. Communication by middle management Annual assessment tool is a complete joke - and they know it

    Advice to Management

Take a little bit of the focus off of billability and more on project profitability. Senior- and mid-level staff have a tendency to do the work that junior-level employees could do so they can 'be billable.' In the mean time your projects aren't profitable because staff with $200/hr bill rates are doing jobs that $50/hr bill rates could cover. Focus on profitability and watch how fast senior- and mid-level staff pass those assignments on and complain we don't have enough junior-level support. Due to the current structure, the organization is top-heavy. The annual assessment is completely subjective and unequal for same-level staff. Develop standard metrics and be honest and fair about the criteria employees are judged on. Under the current system, one employee can get a raise and bonus for showing up everyday, and another is passed up for promotions because they have different managers who handle the assessment process differently.

  2. Good work environment. Very collegial. Good opportunities to work on large projects.

    Pros

Company's ethical standards are high, and management is supportive of decision made based on ethical issues. Work environment is flexible and have not experienced micromanagement. Management listens and tries to make decisions that work in the best interest of staff and clients.

    Cons

This is a big company and is geared toward large projects. Corporate structure is a bit cumbersome and could be better rationalized.

    Advice to Management

A little more streamlining would be helpful. Sometimes there are multiple approvals required.
