Pros

Fantastic Hospitals! I enjoyed working with great nursing staff and attendings who are well versed in their fields and conduct excellent of research.

Cons

The hours just like any other residency are demanding. Some attendings, just like in anywhere else, are malignant. The communication b/t different hospitals could be improved upon with more collaboration.

    Pros

The Benefits (health, time off) are excellent. The company essentially pays for your benefits so money is not deducted from your salary. Medical co-pays are the lowest I've seen anywhere. Within the HIS industry, Partners offers competetive salaries.

    Cons

    - The Information Systems department at Partners is dysfunctional. There are no standards or processes that are common throughout the infrastrucuture. Different hospitals/departments operate in complete isolation from one another, with virtually no communication. This makes it difficult for many analysts to do their job effectively.
    - Much of the technology used at Partners is home grown and archaic. If you are looking to expand your knowledge of industry standard software, forget it.
    - Politics dominates the culture. Obviously, this is an issue at any company, but even more so at Partners. People are often promoted to manager based solely on whom they are friends with, rather than their job skills. Innefective and poor middle/upper managers are the norm here, not the exception.
    - Nobody ever gets fired, no matter how poorly they perform their jobs. There is so much dead weight at Partners, it's outrageous. Many people simply collect a paycheck and do next to nothing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Adopt standard procedures and processes that will be used throughout the IS organization. Promote communication between groups. And make use of collaboration tools such as Project Server, SharePoint, and eRoom MANDATORY throughout the organization. Not up to the indiviudal department or manager.

Good company, but beware of dysfunctional work environments

    Pros

Good company overall to work for with great benefits. There is potential to move around within the company once you get your foot in the door.

    Cons

Whether it is the corporate parent company side that you're interested in or one of the hosptials, konw that there are some departments and work-groups that are very dysfunctional and other departments with great teams and people that could become your friends. The best you can do is interview and then request to speak with a peer after your interview with the head boss or supervisor. Ask the peer how they like working there and see if they pause or shift their eyes before responding...listen to what they say and use your gut instinct to know if they're being genuine.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management and human resources need to listen to employee complaints and use judgement to eliminate dysfunctional managers and supervisors. It would also be beneficial to Institute an anonymous, upward review process, where the reviews get turned into HR.
