Current Employee - Product Manager in San Jose, CA

I have been working at PayPal full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

1. Improving work/life balance (vs. 3 years ago)
2. Stable business overall
3. Great co-workers. Rank & file employees still want to do-the-right-thing
4. A few good managers. Getting fewer.

Cons

1. Constant re-orgs and change in big direction.
2. Very difficult to innovate new products/ideas. Planning process == big idea killer.
3. Sr. execs only keen on building fiefdom and forwarding personal agenda. Land grab mentality.
4. Loooong promotion process.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Talk to rank-and-file employee to get a accurate read of the company and customer sat. Less PPT and more F2F with employee.

I have been working at PayPal full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

PayPal has a unique opportunity to become the world's favorite way to pay and be paid. It can enter into any financial service, it can offer all sorts of payment products and enhancements, like offers, discounts, loyalty, big data. Past management has dragged their feet, but new leaders promise a start-up and experimental approach that bodes well.

    Cons

PayPal has terrible hiring and people management practices, which results in lousy managers hiring huge numbers of lousy people. There exist massive departments filled with friends of friends, most of whom do little work. Years of poor management means that these departments grow regularly every year. There is very little path to promotion from within, because leadership does not seek to groom talent, but hires director-and-up positions from outside.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure you recognize and reward those who have passion for the company. Too often these people are punished for making trouble amid the morass of people doing time. People with energy need to be guided and shaped and groomed and even dragged kicking and screaming into senior management roles.

    Pros

good position on a hot market. the company will get split to another IPO company sooner or later. at current market, RSU is worth 30k+ per year if you have been working more than four years.

    Cons

internal management are poor. Some people has to do most of the work while others does nothing. talents are leaving for Google, Facebook and LinkedIn.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

lay off half of employees and then bring talents back.
