Pros

Paypal has the biggest business growth opportunity in history a global brand name that's recognized the world over and a can do culture that is contagious.

Cons

PayPal has become a big, big company where it takes a bit of effort to get anything done.

So much potential, so much half-assedness

I have been working at PayPal

    Pros

Lots of good people, but frequently in inconsequential positions

    Cons

Too many incompetent people in key positions. Too much terriorialism and an "us versus them" attitude between different groups. Too many over-hyped projects that don't add to the bottom line

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Really invest in infrastructure, customer service and technology, don't just talk about it and then cut headcount and funding for everything that matters

    I worked at PayPal

    Pros

Salary is higher than average and it is a well-recognized (if not well-loved) name.

    Cons

Technological dead-end. Their entire code base is so convoluted that it is nearly unmanageable. This leads to a complete paralysis for development. In addition, their release methodology is completely a mess as it relies on a "big-bang" release with all components being updated at the same time. This is done supposedly as "risk management", but in reality it is simply because the various components are so tightly bound to each other that they must be updated in lock-step.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You *really* need to get in some engineers/managers who understand about building large-scale reliable systems. The current methodology is way too process heavy and incapable of moving at anything faster than a glacial pace.
